Hinds' lab pioneers dialysis innovation

March 19, 2020

Current treatment for kidney dialysis requires cumbersome machinery and more than 200 pounds of water per session, greatly limiting mobile access. Professor Bruce Hinds' lab, working with the UW Center for Dialysis Innovation, has invented a system to regenerate the cleaning water in dialysis using nanowires of photocatalyst. The new system uses energy efficient LEDs, circulates just a few cups full of dialysate and can be small enough to fit in a rolling suitcase. An article published in Nature details this breakthrough technology.
