College of Engineering Academic Conduct Policy

The College of Engineering Academic Conduct Policy applies to all graduate students in the UW Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) Department. MSE graduate students are subject to the University of Washington Graduate School policies and the College of Engineering (CoE) Academic Conduct Policy.

Academic Conduct and Professional Standards

Per the Graduate School, programs may consider “findings and conclusions from a final order in student conduct cases where those findings or conclusions are relevant to the student’s ability to meet a program’s documented academic performance or professional standards or expectations.” Engineers are entrusted with the public good and held to the standards of their disciplines. Therefore, academic misconduct prevents the student from meeting the professional standards and expectations of their field.

College of Engineering Review

Under the CoE Academic Conduct Policy, MSE graduate students are subject to review and possible removal from the College for repeated violations of the UW Student Conduct Code. Graduate students will be placed on Final Academic Alert status after their first academic misconduct finding. Students found responsible for any additional academic misconduct must undergo College review, regardless of sanctions assigned by the central UW process (except in cases of dismissal from the UW). If the College committee votes to remove the student, Materials Science & Engineering will recommend to the Graduate School that the student be dropped from the MSE academic program.

Final Academic Alert

The Final Academic Alert status will last for three quarters, excluding summer. Students not found responsible for additional academic misconduct in the three Final Academic Alert quarters will be returned to good standing. If the behavior is deemed egregious, or if the student is already on Final Academic Alert, Academic Drop could instead be recommended on the first academic misconduct finding per Graduate School Policy 3.7.5.

Academic Drop

A student who has previously been placed on Final Academic Alert due to a finding of responsibility for academic misconduct, who subsequently is found responsible for academic misconduct (even after the three quarter timeline of the Final Academic Alert status), could, after College committee review, escalate immediately to Academic Drop (per Graduate School Policy 3.7.5).
