Navigating the M.S. degree process
Graduation requirements
Plan ahead for graduation. In addition to completing your required courses and credit requirements, there are several requirements and deadlines you will need to meet to graduate. Review the graduation requirements early in your program and use them to plan your coursework, final project and/or internship, and other graduation-related requirements. Be sure you understand what must be completed before your final quarter.
Your advisers
Throughout the program you will work closely with the MSE Graduate Program Manager and your selected faculty adviser. Once you have selected a faculty adviser, you and your adviser must fill out an AMP Project Agreement Form and submit it to the Graduate Program Manager. Your adviser can help you plan your coursework and final project and/or internship to meet your academic and career goals.
Master's courses and schedule
Complete the required core courses, electives, minimum number of credits, and other program requirements outlined in the master's degree requirements. Work with your adviser to plan your course schedule and ensure you are making satisfactory progress toward your degree.
Final project and internship/industrial option
Most students complete a non-thesis master's degree. As part of this degree, students may complete a final project through research, an external internship or industrial experience, or both. Your specific plan should be discussed with and approved by your adviser. During your final quarter, you will present your work to a Supervisory Committee and submit the required paper.
A thesis option may also be available with early approval from your adviser. Students pursuing a thesis will follow the requirements for completing and submitting a master's thesis.

Labs, shops and facilities
Student and faculty researchers have access to these state-of-the-art labs and shops across campus:
- Materials-related labs on campus
- MSE research centers
- UW Engineering research centers and labs
- Undergraduate labs and shops
Other campus spaces
Roberts Hall, 4th Floor student space: The open spaces, kitchen, conference rooms and room 406 are all available for your usage. Access to the lobby and kitchen does not require any keys or permission.
However, to access the two suite doors, you will need the Roberts/Mueller exterior key. For those without keys, you may submit a key request form with your faculty mentor's approval before forwarding to the Labs and Facilities Manager, or to the Graduate Program Manager if you do not yet have a faculty mentor. You will be notified when the key is ready for pick up.
