Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC)

Computer Lab

A Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is used to measure heat flow in or out of a material. From this information a number of thermal properties can be determined: Tg, melting temperature, crystallization temperature, oxidative induction time, % cure, etc. This method uses an empty sample pan as a reference that cancels the heat flow to and from the pan itself.

  • Uses T-Zero aluminum pans which are available to undergraduates free of charge (see information regarding purchase of pans for non-undergrad users)
  • The instrument operates from room temperature to 500 Celsius under a nitrogen purge
  • Samples range from .5 mg to 10 mg
  • Temperature scans are from 1-15° C per min

This instrument is purchased with STF funds specifically for UW student use. Any UW student who is registered and matriculated may use it free of charge. It is not available for UW research use or for non-UW users except on a case-by-case basis.

Training is in two sessions to be completed within one week of each other.

  1. Demonstration of the instrument and discussion of sample preparation and use policies
  2. Driver's test

If a user is unable to demonstrate competence in the test session they may retake it in a third session.
